Dhanushkodi is a ghost town located at the southernmost tip of Pamban Island, in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, India.
History and Significance
Dhanushkodi, meaning “tip of the bow” in Tamil, was once a bustling town with a railway station, church, mosque, and a police station. However, in 1964, a powerful cyclone ripped through the region, devastating the town. The storm surge and winds reaching up to 280 kilometers per hour (170 mph) caused widespread destruction, killing an estimated 1,800 people.
In the aftermath of the cyclone, Dhanushkodi was largely abandoned due to the devastation. However, the town holds significance for several reasons:
- Religious Importance: According to Hindu mythology, Dhanushkodi is believed to be the place where Lord Rama’s army built a bridge, known as Rama Setu or Adam’s Bridge, across the sea to Lanka (present-day Sri Lanka) to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana.
- Unexplored Ruins: The remnants of the town, including the church, railway station, and buildings, stand as a haunting reminder of the cyclone’s fury. These ruins are a popular destination for explorers and photographers.
- Unique Location: Dhanushkodi offers stunning views of the Palk Strait where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean. The scenic beauty, coupled with the abandoned town’s eerie atmosphere, attracts tourists seeking an offbeat travel experience.
