Dubai, often referred to as the “City of Gold,” is a favorite destination for Indians looking to buy gold due to its high quality and lower prices. However, the Indian government has set strict rules on how much gold travelers can bring back to India to prevent smuggling and maintain economic balance.

Gold Import Rules for Indians Traveling from Dubai

According to Indian customs regulations, passengers can bring gold up to a certain limit without paying customs duty. However, this gold must be in the form of jewelry and should not exceed a specific weight or value.

Gold Limit for Men

A male traveler coming from Dubai to India can bring a maximum of 20 grams of gold without paying customs duty. However, there are two conditions:

  1. The value of the gold should not exceed ₹50,000.
  2. The gold must be in jewelry form only—gold bars and coins are not included.

If a man carries more gold than the allowed limit, he must pay customs duty. The current duty rate is 6%, with an additional 1.25% social welfare surcharge.

Additionally, if a passenger has stayed in Dubai for more than six months, they are allowed to bring up to 1 kg of gold, but they must pay duty on it.

Gold Limit for Women

Women travelers have a slightly higher exemption. A female passenger can bring up to 40 grams of gold from Dubai without paying duty, as long as its value does not exceed ₹1 lakh. Like men, this exemption applies only to gold jewelry.

If a woman brings more gold, the customs duty rates are as follows:

  • 40-100 grams: 3% duty
  • 100-200 grams: 6% duty
  • More than 200 grams: 10% duty

Gold Limit for Children

Children under 15 years of age can also bring gold under certain conditions. If a child has stayed in Dubai for more than a year, they can carry up to 40 grams of gold jewelry duty-free. However, proof of identity and relationship with the accompanying guardian is required. Any gold exceeding 40 grams will attract customs duty, similar to the rules for women.

Special Rule for Carrying Up to 1 kg of Gold

Indian passport holders who have lived in Dubai for over six months can bring up to 1 kg of gold coins or bars in their luggage, but they must pay 14% customs duty. If the stay is less than six months, the duty increases to 37%. Additionally, as per UAE regulations, no passenger can carry more than 10 kg of gold, even in jewelry form.

Why Is Gold Cheaper in Dubai?

Gold prices in Dubai are generally 5-10% lower than in India due to several factors:

  1. Lower Taxes – While Dubai has a 5% VAT, tourists can get a refund at the airport. In contrast, India charges 6% import duty, 3% GST, and an additional 5% making charge on GST.
  2. Lower Import Costs – Dubai sources gold directly from mining countries, whereas India imports it with additional costs.
  3. Market Competition – Dubai’s Gold Souk has intense competition, allowing customers to bargain on making charges, which are usually 2-5%, compared to 10-20% in India.
  4. Currency Stability – The UAE Dirham is pegged to the US Dollar, keeping gold prices stable, while fluctuations in the Indian Rupee make gold more expensive in India.

Recent Gold Smuggling Cases

Recently, Kannada and Tamil film actress Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3, 2025, at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly smuggling 14.2-14.8 kg of gold worth ₹12.56 crore. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) found that she had concealed gold bars in a specially designed belt and jacket. She had reportedly made 30 trips to Dubai in one year, earning ₹12-13 lakh per trip by smuggling 12-13 kg of gold each time.

Government Tightens Gold Import Rules

In early 2025, the Indian government announced stricter monitoring of gold imports, especially at airports. With global gold prices rising and Indian festivals increasing demand, customs officials are now seizing excess gold more frequently. These strict measures aim to prevent illegal trade and protect the economy.

Key Points to Remember Before Bringing Gold from Dubai

  • Carry purchase bills and a purity certificate for the gold.
  • Declare any gold exceeding the permitted limit at customs (Red Channel).
  • Store gold in your handbag to prevent theft or loss.
  • Gold bars and coins require customs duty—they are not duty-free.

Bringing gold from Dubai can be a great way to save money, but travelers must strictly follow Indian customs rules to avoid seizure, fines, or legal action. So, if you’re planning to buy gold from Dubai, make sure to stay within the prescribed limits for a hassle-free experience.
