Poochorithal Vizha, Arul Migu Mariamman Temple. Samayapuram, Tiruchirappalli The most anticipated event is Poochorithal, which takes place at the Arulmigu Mariamman Temple in Samayapuram, Tiruchi. The event commemorates the rain of flowers on Samayapurathu Mariamman. Poochorithal is a 28-day celebration that has been celebrated annually for millennia, beginning on the last Sunday of the Tamil month, Maasi (March in the Gregorian calendar) and ending on the last Sunday of ‘Panguni.’
This year, Poochorithal will fall from March 10 to April 7, 2024. Arulmigu Mariamman Temple, Samayapuram, is a historic Hindu temple located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India, and is regarded as one of the state’s wealthiest temples after Palani. You should be aware that Mariamman, the major deity, is a sand and clay representation of the supreme mother goddess Durga (also known as Mahakali or Aadi Shakthi), as are many of the traditional Mariamman deities revered as the most powerful goddesses.
As a result, unlike many other Hindu gods, no abhishekams are done for the principal deity. Instead, the “abhishekam” is carried out on the tiny stone statue in front of it. Devotees think the Goddess possesses incredible healing powers. As a result, they have a ceremony in which they purchase silver or steel miniature replicas of various body parts that need to be mended and leave them in the temple’s donation box. As part of the celebration, it is thought that the temple’s primary god will fast (‘pachai pattini viratham’) for the entire 28 days. So, only fluids like buttermilk, sugarcane juice, ‘thullu maavu,’
Abhishekam is performed with coconut water, known as ‘Paanagam’. In addition, devotees offer mavilakku (a delicious dessert prepared with jaggery, rice flour, and ghee). Devotees from remote areas also offer raw salt to the Goddess. Every Sunday, devotees would also offer tons of gorgeous fresh flowers to the god and enjoy darshan. According to the norms, the temple administration presents the first batch of flowers to the deity on Sunday morning and then opens the gates for others.
After circumnavigating the sanctuary, the flowers were taken from Kodimaram to the sanctum sanctorum. These blooms are then picked and delivered to the temple’s micro compost yard for bio-fertilization. The majority of devotees/visitors to the Arulmigu Mariamman temple come on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, which are Mariamman’s holy days. So, if you’re planning a trip to Tamil Nadu at this time, make sure to include one Sunday in your itinerary to enjoy the holy festival “Poochorithal Vizha.”
Activities
During this event, worshipers flock to the temple to sprinkle flowers on the image of the Hindu goddess Mariamman. During this time, it is thought that the goddess fasts for the benefit of her devotees for 28 days.
