Jis Joy’s “Thalavan,” which stars Asif Ali and Biju Menon, is a fascinating investigative thriller. The number of police-themed films that have recently entered Malayalam cinema asks the question of what ‘Thalavan’ has to offer. People were curious about “Thalavan” because of Biju Menon’s previous release, “Thundu,” which was another police film that did not generate much of an audience response at the box office. This film is a strong investigative narrative because it is well-made and has sufficient content. The plot centers on two police officers named Jayashankar (played by Biju Menon) and Karthik (Asif Ali), and how each one gets involved in a murder investigation. Even though the film isn’t particularly suspenseful, it nevertheless manages to hold your interest.

The movie hooks you into the narrative right away by plunging right into the investigation phase. The two cops also have a persistent ego conflict, however this side plot has no bearing on the main narrative.

It is admirable that the film stays away from overly dramatic moments and has a steady tone throughout. At first glance, the ego conflicts between Asif Ali and Biju Menon may appear clichéd, suggesting that Asif Ali is content to continue portraying characters with fiery tempers. Nonetheless, the novel uses his character’s temperament for a purpose. Biju Menon makes an impression with his powerful and compelling performance, which is further enhanced by his easygoing personality. It’s clear today that Biju Menon performs exceptionally well in law enforcement tasks.

The movie stars Asif Ali, Dileesh Pothan, Miya George, Anusree, Kottayam Nazeer, and more performers in addition to Biju Menon. There are no “aha” moments in the plot; instead, the investigation proceeds naturally. The film falls short of providing the spectacular sequences you may have been hoping for. Additionally, the authors avoid providing too much details so that readers could make assumptions about who the murderer might be. The script has been expertly written by authors Sarath Perumbavoor and Anand Thevarkkat. Though it seems like the antagonist doesn’t have much character development, the climax sequence is well-done. The use of decoy murderers throughout, a popular device in investigative thrillers, is one of the film’s recurring themes. The movie’s ending is intriguing, though.

You might find yourself thinking of other police investigation thrillers like “Garudan” or “Anweshippin Kandethum” while watching “Thalavan,” but the movie makes a point of setting itself apart from these parallels. Asif Ali plays a larger role than Biju Menon, and their scenes together are captivating; even though there is tension between their characters, they play it realistically without going overboard.
