Those planning to visit Ooty or Kodaikanal between May 7 and June 30 will have to take an e-pass in advance. The court has put forward the directive while considering the petition regarding environmental protection. Currently, there is heavy traffic in Ooty and Kodaikanal. Up to 2000 vehicles reach here every day. Meanwhile, the number of people who can reach the region will be determined after the study conducted by Madras IIT as per the instructions of the District Collectors. Later, tourists will be allowed based on this number. The court will hear the plea again on July 5.
The Nilgiris and Dindigul Collectors said that following the High Court order, the state government will be instructed to reduce the entry of vehicles and control the number of tourists. From 2000 people per day to 20000 tourists during the holidays.
At present, the court has not directed how many people should be admitted in a day. The court has also directed the collectors to collect information such as the type of vehicle, the number of passengers, whether they are traveling only during the day or whether they intend to stay overnight.
