Central government to change rules for buying and selling new SIMs. The government’s move comes in the context of increasing frauds using SIM cards. The Act will come into effect from January 1, 2024

The use of smartphones has increased tremendously in the country. As well as fraud using technology. With this, the government is implementing crucial decisions to prevent such frauds. According to the new Telecommunication Bill, individuals who purchase fake SIM cards will face serious consequences. Offenders can be jailed for up to 3 years and fined up to Rs 50 lakh.

Telecom companies will collect the biometric information of every customer who buys a SIM card. By including biometric details, SIM cards can be used to prevent fraud. From January 1, 2024, SIM cards will be available through the digital KYC system.
The new restrictions also apply to SIM card sellers. Registration of telecom franchises, point of sale agents and SIM distributors has also been made mandatory.
