The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai is currently undertaking a substantial endeavor to strategically install 762 public bus shelters throughout the emirate.

The overarching undertaking is scheduled to be finished by 2025, thereby supporting the municipality’s dedication to improving public transportation services.

Dubai’s Ambitious Bus Shelter Project through 3D Printing Technology

As part of this ambitious plan, RTA is exploring innovative construction methods, including the potential use of 3D printing technology for some shelters. The trial collaboration with a technology company signifies a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure development, aligning with Dubai’s vision of embracing cutting-edge solutions.

Mobility and accessibility features

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized that these bus shelters are a pivotal element in the authority’s broader strategy to enhance public transport services and elevate customer satisfaction.

Importantly, the design adheres to the Dubai Code for People of Determination, ensuring wheelchair-accessible areas. This initiative resonates with the “My Community… A Place for Everyone” initiative launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, with the goal of fostering a disability-friendly city.

Categorization and User-Centric Design

The number of people using each bus stop has been carefully considered by RTA, which has divided the shelters into four levels. The infrastructure will be able to accommodate the wide range of public demands thanks to this user-centric approach.

  1. Main stop: serving over 750 passengers daily
  2. Secondary stop: catering to 250 to 750 passengers daily
  3. Primary stop: Addressing the needs of 100 to 250 passengers daily
  4. Pick-up/drop-off station: Designed for up to 100 passengers daily

Inclusive Amenities and Information Displays

Main stops will include air-conditioned areas to ensure the comfort of commuters, as part of the inclusive design. Shelters will all include outside areas with shade and places to advertise. Additionally, to improve the commuting experience overall, these updated bus shelters will have information displays that display detailed information, including bus routes, timetables, pick-up times, and pertinent passenger data. In its pursuit of a more accessible urban environment, more public transportation use, and the expansion of mobility alternatives, RTA has taken a giant leap forward with this project.
