What is the story behind the Guna Caves?

The Guna Caves, dating back to 1821, were initially discovered by British officer B.S.  Ward, only to fade into obscurity until their rediscovery in the 1990s, showcasing their natural beauty.

Named after the 1992 film ‘Guna,’ shot within its depths, the caves were originally known as the Devil’s Kitchen.  Legend ties the caves to Hindu mythology, suggesting they were the cooking grounds of the Pandavas, thus earning the moniker ‘kitchen.’  The origin of the term ‘Devil’ remains shrouded in mystery, with some speculating it is linked to the bats inhabiting the caves.
Despite their picturesque allure, the Guna Caves pose significant dangers.

Nestled at an altitude of 2230 meters and surrounded by Shola trees and grass, the caves are flanked by three massive pillar rocks.  Accessing the caves requires daring individuals to cling to two rocks and descend into the steep rock formed by the third rock.  The fine line between adventure and danger is hidden in these treacherous yet enchanting caverns.

How many people died in Guna Cave?

Guna caves (Devil’s Kitchen) are deep bat-infested chambers between the three gigantic boulders that are the Pillar Rocks. The deep narrow ravines of the caves are now closed to the public due to the tragic deaths of twelve youths there. These dangerous caves are highly protected now, and tourists can see sections of the cave system from afar.In the late 1970s the inside of the caves was well photographed. Tourists need to walk for about 400 meters 10 minutes from the main entrance to reach the cave and hill top and it is a great location for photography.

What is the other name of Guna cave?

Known earlier as ‘Devil’s Kitchen’, the place got its name ‘Guna’ after the 1992 Tamil blockbuster movie “Guna” was shot here. Located on the Moir Point road, the caves are situated 10 kilometres from Kodaikanal.
