The legendary emperor’s birthday is celebrated with Prithviraj Jayanti Samaroh. Born perhaps in 1166 and passing away in 1192, Prithviraja III was a Rajput warrior king belonging to the Chauhan (Chahamana) tribe. He founded the most powerful kingdom in Rajasthan.

A turning point in India’s medieval history was reached when Prithviraja was defeated by Muslim leader Muʿizz al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Sām (Muḥammad Ghūrī) in the second battle of Taraori (Tarain) in 1192. After taking the throne in approximately 1177, the youthful Prithviraja inherited a kingdom that extended from Mewar in the south to Sthanvishvara (Thanesar, which was formerly the capital of the 7th-century emperor Harsha) in the north.

After Prithviraja took over the government himself in a few years, he was confronted with a coup by his cousin Nagarjuna, who proclaimed his individual claim to the throne. After putting down the uprising with brutality, Prithviraja focused on the Bhadanaka kingdom, which was not far away. Although the Bhadanakas had been a constant menace to the Chauhan-held area surrounding Delhi, they were completely exterminated by 1182 and were never again mentioned in later chronicles.

The Samrat Prithviraj Jayanti Samaroh for 2024 actually isn’t in late November or early December this year. According to a government website listing upcoming festivals in India, the celebration falls on:

  • June 2nd, 2024

This means you can expect festivities and celebrations around that date!
